* (Jan 19, 1807-Oct 12, 1870) During the Civil War, his brilliance as a leader was well recognized. He was a graduate of West Point and he first made a name for himself in the Mexican War. He also commanded the attack at Harper's Ferry. A southern loyalist, he was neither a slave advocate nor a slave owner. He was dedicated to his home state of Virginia.
