Buddhism (Vajrayana) : The Chinese calendar combines lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days. To match the solar calendar, an extra month is added once every few years (seven years out of a 19-year cycle).

Buddhism (Vajrayana) : At New Year during the night, the Jade Emperor conveyed all animals. Only 12 showed up. To thank them, Buddha dedicated one symbolic year per visitor. Each new born would inherit the relevant animal's characteristics.
